Surrealism artists sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind and champion the irrational and poetic. This avant-garde art movement developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War I. Influential Surrealist artists include Salvador Dali, Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, and the movement's founder, Andrew Breton. Dali's 'the Persistence of Memory,' an ode to time, is the most famous Surrealist painting in history. Other notable artworks of the Surrealism movement include Frida Kahlo's 'The Broken Column,' Pablo Picasso's 'The Weeping Woman,' and Andrew Breton's 'Egg in the Church or the Snake' photographic collage.
