Activist and Street Artist Keith Haring (1958 – 1990) had a distinctive 1980s style that blended Pop Art with graffiti. His serious subject matters like "Ignorance = Fear (1989)" spoke to the AIDS epidemic and was rendered in bold tones with a graphic aesthetic. At his death, at only 31, Haring had elevated his artwork from underground Street Art in New York City to the most prestigious galleries around the world. Haring strove to make his art more accessible and opened a retail store in New York City's SoHo neighborhood in 1986 to sell affordable items like poster prints and T-shirts. In 1988, Harig was diagnosed with AIDS. He created a foundation to support children's programs and organizations dedicated to raising AIDS awareness. With its simple style and deep themes of love, death, war, and social harmony, Haring's art continues to appeal to viewers today.
