The Impressionism art movement originated in Paris in the 1860s. Impressionist artists sought to capture a feeling or experience rather than an accurate depiction of the art subject. Characteristics of Impressionist paintings include landscape or ordinary life subjects painted using small yet visible brush strokes with an open composition and a focus on accurate light depiction, especially in light's changing qualities. The Impressionist movement was started by Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Alfred Sisley, and Frederic Bazille who all shared an interest in painting landscape and contemporary life rather than historical or mythological scenes. Other notable artists in this movement include Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas, and Henri Matisse.
