American Realist painter, Edward Hopper (1882 – 1967) was known for his oil paintings yet was also proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker. Hopper was trained as an illustrator and spent his early career in advertising while working on his own art and traveling overseas to gain inspiration from Impressionist and abstract artists. During the second half of his life, Hopper produced his greatest works, including his best-known painting, "Nighthawks." His pared down, calculated renderings allowed Hopper to reflect his vision of modern life in America. The Edward Hopper House is the artist's family home in Nyack, New York that has been made into a museum and study center for artists.
